Plitvička jezera

Plitvička jezera – the best known Croatian National park, included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites. The main attraction of this park, unique in the world, consists of 16 small lakes mutually connected by means of cascades created by travertine (a type of limestone) sedimentation. The park comprises the source of the Korana river in an area surrounded by dense woods of beech, fir and juniper trees, partly in the form of a primeval forest. In addition to lakes and woods the Park is adorned also by several caves, springs, flower meadows, and among the rare animals species present, the brown bear should especially be mentioned.
It is hard to say whether the Park is more beautiful in spring when the flowers on its meadows bloom, in the reflections of the autumn polychromy in the lakes’ mirrors, or in winter peace when its cascades are “cramped” by ice in the snowy landscape. The use of special vehicles for the transportation of visitors (panoramic “trains”, electric ships), as well as its favourable location next to the main road connecting Zagreb with Dalmatia contribute to the popularity of this Park.

Brijuni
Brijuni – are a group of islands consisting of two fairly large islands and twelve islets along the western Istrain coast, near Pula, covering a total surface of seven square kilometres only.
Not only the islands but the surrounding sea, too, are under protection. The Brijuni islands are famous for the well-preserved Mediterranean vegetation of the holly oak, the high macchia (makija) and pines and cypresses, partly shaped as a landscape park. There is also a safari park here with exotic herbivores and a valuable cultural heritage from Roman and Byzantine times. Because of their extraordinary beauty the islands have been a favourite holiday resort of world statesmen and aristocracy since the beginning of the 20th Century.

Northern Velebit
Northern Velebit, the most recent Croatian national park, was established in 1999. The intention was to include in it the most attractive and most valuable natural areas of Northern Velebit. The small area of this expressly mountainous park, is a concentration of an extraordinary number of attractions – the magnificent rocky forms of “Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi”, the unique natural botanical garden, and the Lukina Jama cave, one of the deepest in the world. For these reasons mountain-climbers consider this area to be the greatest jewel among Croatian mountains. The somewhat lower visiting rate, caused by its distance from main roads, futher increases the mystery and the genuineness of this natural environment.
